The Cliffhanger: Edward Randy, also known as simply Edward Randy (エドワード・ランディ), is an action/beat 'em up video game developed by Data East and released in 1990 for arcades. A Sega Saturn port was planned to release in 1997-1998 as a part of "Arcade Gears" line by Xing Entertainment, but ended up unreleased.[1]
Story[]
1930s, Europe. In that country, where the feared colonel known as the "Supreme Demon" resides, research into weapons of mass destruction is underway in secret. An old scientist, who learned the truth about his research, feared that the colonel would misuse it, and took away the "Prism", the stone that played the central role in his research, and entrusted it to his granddaughter Charlotte.
On September 14th, 193X, Charlotte was being chased by the colonel and a certain national army who were relentlessly tracking Prism's whereabouts. She is accidentally saved by Edward Randy, an adventurer, and thus begins the fight for the Prism.
Gameplay[]
Edward Randy is a beat em up game where the player must fight waves of enemies during various action setpieces. Edward Randy's main form of attack is using a whip, allowing him to attack in eight directions, though he can also dash, slide and stomp enemies. The player has no control over the camera's scrolling, as the screen scrolls automatically in various directions, with each stage having the protagonist riding some vehicle giving chase to the enemies. At some points he will also board the enemies' giant machines, at which point the player is given more freedom of movement.
Instead of lives or a lifebar, the character's health is tied to the score; continuously defeating enemies raises the score, thus giving the player more health, while taking hits lowers it, with the player losing the game when the score reaches zero.
