Magical Drop II (マジカルドロップ2) is a competitive matching puzzle game, released by Data East in 1996 for the Neo Geo and later ported to other platforms. It is the second title in Data East's Magical Drop series.
Story[]
Once upon a time, there was a book called "Magical Drop" in the old library of the Enchanted Forest. In this book, there is a paradise called Magical Land, where many unique fairies live.
In Magical Land, a "Magical Drop" tournament is held once a year, and the winner is given a "Magical Drop". This "Magical Drop" has the mysterious power to "make dreams come true", so many contestants always gather at the tournament.
And it's that time of year again. A "Magical Drop" competition is about to take place. By the way, who will get the "Magical Drop" this time?
Gameplay[]
Magical Drop II features similar gameplay to its predecessor, with the player controlling a jester at the bottom of the play field who can pull and hold the colored drops which constantly appear at the top of the screen, which can then be thrown back. Whenever the player matches three drops of the same color they are destroyed, with the main objective being to create chain reactions of matching drops, thus causing more drops to be sent to the adversary's field. The player which lets the drops reach the bottom of his field loses.
Unlike in the previous game, special drops can be matched with regular drops of the same color, though they still can't be picked up together. This game also introduces a slew of new drop types, such as rainbow drops which will erase any color drop they're matched with, ice drops which defrost as drops are matched around them, and arrow drops which erase all drops in the direction they're pointing at. Characters are also differentiated by which special drop they receive, each of them being ranked by their difficulty.
Players can choose between three different modes: Story Mode, which is the main gameplay mode, Puzzle Mode, which is a single player survival mode, and Flash Mode, which is a time attack with preset fields. Notably, the western version of the game completely omits Flash Mode, as well as removing all voiceovers and unique endings.
