BurgerTime (バーガータイム) is a single screen action platformer game developed by Data East and originally released in 1982 for arcades. The game originally ran on the DECO Cassette System, but later received a dedicated cabinet conversion. The game received numerous ports across various platforms.
Overview[]
In BurgerTime players control the chef Peter Pepper, whose main task is to assemble giant hamburgers. The screen is composed of platforms on different heights and ladders which connect them, with the hamburger ingredients sitting on said platforms. Peter Pepper can move left and right and climb the ladders up and down, as well as drop from platforms. By walking over the full length of an ingredient it is dropped to the level below; if the dropped ingredient falls over another ingredient, that ingredient is knocked down a level as well. Once all ingredients are dropped to the floor level the hamburger is assembled, and once all hamburgers in the level are assembled the level is complete.
In order to hinder the player's progress the screen has enemies constantly wandering around, Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg. In order to defend against them, the player can shake a limited use pepper shaker at them. An enemy hit by pepper is temporarily stunned, allowing the player to safely move past them. If the player manages to drop an ingredient over an enemy it gets squished between them, while dropping an ingredient while an enemy is standing on it will cause it to drop two levels, with the enemy also disappearing. Defeated enemies respawn after a while.
